Bantams are miniature chickens weighing under 3 lbs as adults. They lay lots of eggs like the big girls, just in a much smaller package Many people are surprised at just how how well the bantams lay mine are great winter layers and we are always over run with their eggs in the spring and summer. Most bantam eggs are a creamy tan color. They make great pets and are good if you are limited on space. They are a excellent way to start children out with chickens since their small size makes them easy to handle. We raise our Bantams and Standards together and they get along just fine despite the size difference. There are over 350 breeds and varieties of bantams. Most every standard breed has a bantam counterpart and there are some breeds that only come in bantam size. I always love having a few bantams running around the yard.
Standard Chicken Egg & A Bantam Egg
When cooking with Bantam Eggs use 2 for every 1 large egg called for in a recipe.
Cochins orinaginated in China. They were first brought to England in the 1860's where they are called pekin bantams. They have a lot of feathers which makes them look bigger then they are. They have feathers on their feet and legs. This breed also comes in large fowl. I have always had Cochins and just love them. They are excellent mothers and are very gentle plus the chicks are by far the cutest chicks on the farm with their fuzzy little feet. I raise Black/Blue Mottleds and Calicos see my cochin album for pictures
